Parting of the Sea (Nature’s Nosh)

Exodus 14:10: “And as Pharoh neared, the children of Israel saw that Egypt (the Egyptians) was riding after them. And they were very frightened, and cried out to G-d.

14:13: “And Moshe said to the people: Don’t be afraid. Stand firm, and see the saving acts of G-d, which he will do for you today… .

14:15: “And G-d said to Moshe… .

14:16: “… lift our rod, and hold your hand over the sea, and part it, and the children if Israel will come in the sea, via dry land.

14:22: “And the children of Israel came in the sea, on dry land, and the waters stood on their right and on their left.

Though this week’s parsha has so much exciting imagery, I knew we have to start with the parting of the sea. There we were, the sea before us, chariots chasing us, nowhere to go, and then… the sea parts. And we walk through. The HIGH of the moment, barely daring to believe it was real, that it was safe to walk through… we relive it every year, traveling, through story and reenactment, from slavery to freedom, but also from certainty into the unknown.

Ingredients:

  • 3 leaves of lettuce (I used butter lettuce)
  • 1/4 c. leftover rice, buckwheat, quinoa, etc.
  • A few microgreens (optional)
  • A bit of shredded carrot

Tools:

None, though you may want something to weigh down the lettuce and prop up the leaves (see below) such as egg cups, bowls, or mugs.

Instructions:

  1. Place one lettuce leaf on your work surface.

2. Spread rice/quinoa/buckwheat “sand” in the center.

3. Place leaves on either side of “sand.” You may need to prop them up with something (I used egg cups, as you can see).

4. Add microgreen seaweed (we need to remember this was under water just a few minutes ago!) and carrot people.

5. After imagination time has ended, split the filling between the three leaves.

6. Add anything else you want (hummus? feta? avocado?) and fold. YUM!

We changed it up a bit based on what I had on hand & where the kids took it. I did the greens on the outside of a platter with cheese slices down the middle & hummus as the sand on top of the cheese (white cheese not yellow). Then on the far outer edges we put smoked salmon for fish, green & black olives for salt in the sea, baby carrots standing on end thru the hummus and then some on their sides. My kids decided it should be Pharaoh’s army that was getting caught up in the sea so we went with that and halved hard boiled eggs for the chariot wheels along the edge of the hummus with the downed “men”. It went over well, made a great 3rd meal presentation & the little ones helped put it all together. It was very engaging & had everyone, adults included, thinking about the portion which I really liked. Thank you for the ideas & all your hard work! 🙂
