Baby Eisav and Ya’akov

Bereishit / Genesis 25:24When her time before birth was complete, there were twins in her belly.
וַיִּמְלְאוּ יָמֶיהָ לָלֶדֶת וְהִנֵּה תוֹמִם בְּבִטְנָהּ׃

25:25The first one emerged covered with red hair, and they called him Eisav.
וַיֵּצֵא הָרִאשׁוֹן אַדְמוֹנִי כֻּלּוֹ כְּאַדֶּרֶת שֵׂעָר וַיִּקְרְאוּ שְׁמוֹ עֵשָׂו׃

25:26And then his brother emerged…וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן יָצָא אָחִיו …׃

Ingredients as Shown:

  • 1 small red apple
  • 2 grapes
  • 4 black sesame seeds

Tools (small children may need assistance):

  • Small, sharp knife
  • Vegetable peeler

Instructions :

  1. Cut rounds from apple on either side of core, then cut on sides of apple. Save the core.

2. Peel one round and one side piece.

3. Cut the side pieces in half lengthwise, then cut each length in half, with one half longer than the other, to make arms and legs.

4. Match the peeled body (Ya’akov/Jacob) with the peeled arms and legs, and the unpeeled body (Eisav/Esau) with the unpeeled arms and legs. Cut a small flat part from one side of each grape so it doesn’t roll around. Place the sesame seed “eyes” on the grapes, and place above the bodies.

5. Use the knife or peeler to cut two tiny slivers of red peel from the core. Add to the grapes to make a “mouth.”

7. If it is standard sandwich height, this should be tight enough to hold everything in place. You can surround your babies with sprouts if you wish.
