Moses Passing on the Mantle

Bamidbar / Numbers 27:12And G-d said to Moses: Climb up Mount Avarim and see the land which I have given the Children of Israel.
27:13Once you have seen it, you will be gathered to y people, as was your brother Aaron.
27:14[Because you disobeyed me in the Wilderness of Zin] (see 20:10)כַּאֲשֶׁר מְרִיתֶם פִּי בְּמִדְבַּר־צִן בִּמְרִיבַת הָעֵדָה לְהַקְדִּישֵׁנִי בַמַּיִם לְעֵינֵיהֶם הֵם מֵי־מְרִיבַת קָדֵשׁ מִדְבַּר־צִן׃ {ס}
27:15And Moses said to G-d:
27:16“Let the god of every breath and spirit appoint a man over the community.
27:17Who will go out before them and lead them, and will bring them out and bring them back, so that the community of G-d will not be like a shepherd-less flock.
27:18And G-d said to Moses: Bring Joshua the son of Nun, a man with spirit, and put your hands on him,וַיֹּאמֶר ה’ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה קַח־לְךָ אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן־נוּן אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־רוּחַ בּוֹ וְסָמַכְתָּ אֶת־יָדְךָ עָלָיו׃
27:19Stand him before Elazar the Kohen (priest), and before the entire community declare him, in their presence,

27:20Giving him some of your authority, so that the entire community of the Children of Israel will listen to him.
27:21He will stand before Elazar the Kohen, who will ask about his authority by use of the Urim and Tumim: When he says they shall go out, and when he says they shall come, him and all of the Children of Isreal with him, and the entire community.
27:22And Moses did as G-d commanded, and he took Joshua, and stood him before Elazar the Kohen, and before the entire community.

Ingredients as Shown:

  • Sandwich fixings of your choice, using two different colored bread
  • Apple
  • Anything else you want

Tools:

  • Person-shaped cookie cutter
  • Goat or sheep or lamb or bull or ram shaped cookie cutter

Instructions:

Depending on the size of your cookie cutter vs the size of your bread, you may be able to get two (or three, including Elazar) people on one slice of bread. I have a nativity scene set, which is handy, but as two of the three characters are kneeling, they are not of as much use as I hoped.

  1. Decide how your Moses, Joshua, and Elazar (if using) will fit on your bread. These instructions are for those facing each other.
  2. Using the cookie cutter, cut a person (or persons) out of each slice. Switch the slices so that the colors contrast, flipping if needed.

3. Use as you would to make any sandwich.

4. Add an apple, using a tiny cutter to add any type of animal sacrificed in Pinchas.

Alternatively, if using very small cutters, you can emboss, switch types of bread, or take out the cutouts altogether (shown here, item PC0472 from https://cookiecutter.com/TALYA). Do not use the completely cut-out system for gooey fillings (e.g. PB&J).
