Gathering Israel from Around the World

… in which G-d gathers us from wherever we may be, all around the world. We are represented by raisins, golden raisins, and craisins, as Jews come in every color.

Deuteronomy / Dvarim 30:1And it will be, when these things occur, the blessings and the curses, and your hearts turn back, whereever you are, all over the world, in the places where I scattered you.
30:2And you return to G-d, and heed all of the words I command you this day: you and your children, with your entire heart, and your entire soul.
30:3And G-d will return you with mercy, and gather you from amongst the nations in which He scattered you.
30:4He will gather you from the ends of the earth.
30:5And bring you to the land given to your fathers, which you inherited from your fathers. And you will become better off and more numerous than your fathers.
30:6And G-d will circumcise your heart, and the hearts of your children, to love the Lord your G-d, with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.

Ingredients as Shown:

  • Raisins, Golden Raisins, and/or Craisins (I used a mixture)
  • Celery
  • Peanut Butter (or sub almond butter, sunbutter, or even cream cheese!)

Tools:

  • Scissors
  • Knife or spoon for spreading peanut butter
  • Printout of world map (I printed this: Free printable world maps), you may want to laminate if you want to use repeatedly OR one of those flexible placemats made for kids that have a map of the world.

Instructions:

  1. Cut raisins, etc. into smaller pieces (optional), so they fit better for the snack. The dried fruit represents the Jewish people. I used a mixture, not only because I had it handy, but also because Jews come in all colors.

2. Place pieces on all continents on map, to represent that we were dispersed all over the world.

3. Decide if you want to “gather” by pouring the dried fruit into a bowl, or by using the celery like a magic wand while the fruit is still on the map.

4. Put peanut butter on part of celery desired.

IF POURING:

5. Fold paper slightly, pour into a bowl.

MAGIC WAND OPTION:

Put peanut butter on one end of celery. Touch the dried fruit so it sticks to the peanut butter, signifying G-d gathering the people from all over the world (do not use a printed-out, unlaminated map for this, so as to avoid consuming ink).

6. Dip peanut-buttered celery in bowl with dried fruit, or arrange fruit on peanut-buttered celery a’la “ants on a log.”
