Noah’s Ark

Bereishit / Genesis 6:12And G-d saw the Earth, and decided to kill all life on it.
6:13And G-d said to Noah: the end of all flesh is coming, because evil has filled the Earth because of them, and I am going to kill all life on the Earth.
6:14Make an ark for yourself… ׃
6:15Make for it an overhanging roof, an opening on the side, and three stories.
6:16And I will bring the flood over the entire land… ׃
6:17And I will make my covenant with you, and you will come to the ark with your sons, and your wife with your sons’ wives.

7:2Take seven pairs, male and female, of each pure animal, and of the impure animals bring two, male and female,מִכֹּל  הַבְּהֵמָה הַטְּהוֹרָה תִּקַּח־לְךָ שִׁבְעָה שִׁבְעָה אִישׁ וְאִשְׁתּוֹ וּמִן־הַבְּהֵמָה אֲשֶׁר לֹא טְהֹרָה הִוא שְׁנַיִם אִישׁ וְאִשְׁתּוֹ׃
7:3Bring also seven pairs of each type of bird, male and female, to seed the land.

7:5And Noah did all that G-d commanded.

Ingredients as shown:

  • 1 large bell pepper (any color; I used yellow)
  • 2 stalks celery
  • Raw, unsalted sunflower seeds
  • 1 cabbage leaf

Tools:

  • Sharp knife (adult help may be needed)

Instructions:

  1. Examine the pepper. Mine consisted of three large segments. The body of the boat was to be two of the segments, with the third being removed except for the edges which would form the base for the roof.
  2. Cut the two ends of the pepper, as shown, removing the top portion of the “boat.” Note the notch at the top of the “V.”

3. Looking at the pepper from the side, cut a small part of the bottom off so that when the pepper is placed on the surface, the top edge of the boat is parallel to the bottom (or pretty close).

4. (Optional) Carefully cut through the inside to separate the seeds from the stem.

5. Cut a door in one side.

6. Slice a celery stalk so it is longer than the edge to edge of the pepper (longer is ok). Trim so that it is thin enough to easily fit in the notches on the edges of the pepper. Put in the notches.

7. Cut the cabbage piece to fit as the roof. Fold in half to make it easily drape, put on top of “ark.”

8. Taking another stalk of celery, determine length you want the ramp to be. Avoid trimming very much of the top end. Cut to length, then cut the sides so that the end of the “ramp” can fit in the “door” (which is why you want the narrow, top end.

9. Taking a toothpick or skewer, poke small holes, two by two, on the length of the celery. I found I was not able to fit my fingers as close together as I expected, so ended up skipping rows. Keep this in mind, or just be ok skipping rows.

10. Insert sunflower seeds, pointy side down, into holes.

11. Attach “ramp” to “door.”
