Sukkah

Leviticus / Vayikra 23:34And G-d spoke to Moses, saying:
23:35Speak to the children of Israel, saying: on the fifteenth day of the seventh month will be the holiday of Sukkot*, seven days for G-d.
23:36The first day will be a holy day; you shall do no work.
23:37You will make burnt offerings to G-d for seven days. The eighth day shall be a holy day: you shall make a burnt offering, and do no work.
23:38These are the times for G-d, that you will call holy, and make burnt offerings, meal offerings, sacrifices, and libations, on each day as proper.
23:39In addition to (lit. apart from) sabbaths and voluntary gifts and oaths and generosities that you will give to G-d.
23:40But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather the yield of the land, you will celebrate the holiday of G-d for seven days. On the first day you will rest, and on the eighth day you will rest.
23:41And on the first day, you will take fruit from the beautiful tree, a branch of date palm, a branch of myrtle, and a branch of willow, and put them before the L-rd your G-d for seven days.
23:42And you will celebrate this holy day for G-d seven days, every year, a law for all time, in every generation, you will celebrate it on the seventh month.
23:43You will sit in booths for seven days: every citizen of Israel will sit in booths.
23:44So that your generations will know that in booths I had the children of Israel live, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the L-rd your G-d.
23:45And Moses/Moshe conveyed the holy times to the children of Israel.

* Generally translated as “booths.”

Instructions:

  1. Measure celery against cracker. Cut 1 thick or two thin pieces slightly LONGER than the cracker, and one piece SHORTER than the cracker.

2. Cut 2 more very small pieces from the celery. Then cut a flat part off the shorter piece of celery. Set the two tiny pieces as a table, top with the now-flat piece of celery. This is your table (yes, in real live one builds a sukkah first, but it is very difficult to get the celery table in later).

3. Dip the edge of a cracker in hummus. Set on edge so hummus is on one side, surrounding teh “table.” Attach another cracker to the hummus side. Repeat with a third cracker, attaching dipped side to the second cracker.

4. Cut the ramaining slice/s of celery into thin sticks. Top “sukkah” with this “schach.”
