Women and Children on their Way to Egypt

Genesis/Breishit 45:19Take wagons from Egypt for your children and wives. Bring your father, and return.
46:5And Jacob left Be’er Sheva, and the children of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their children, and their wives in the wagons that Pharoah had sent for this purpose.

Ingredients as Shown:

Tools:

  • Small bowl
  • Spoon
  • Wax paper or parchment paper for a work surface.

Instructions:

  1. Put a generous amount of powdered sugar in the bowl. Add a teaspoon of water, mix thoroughly. Add a few drops at a time to make a very thick paste. Use the minimum amount of water possible; the thicker it is, the stronger will be your structure, and the shorter the drying time.
  2. Snap the graham cracker sheet into quarters along the perforations. Snap or cut one of the quarters so that it is slightly longer than would be needed to cover the small edge of the quarters. Caution: the ones I purchased this time sometimes snapped in the wrong places; have extra sheets ready.
  3. Spread sugar glue along the FRONT of the long edge and two shorter edges of the smaller piece. Spread along the FRONT of the long edge of the other, large pieces.

4. Make a box with three sides. Note: my glue was too runny; it doesn’t have to look this way.

Allow to dry for w bit while making the woman and child.

TO MAKE WOMAN:

5. Clean scissors and dry them well. Cut a raisin legnthwise, in half or narrower strips, depending on the size of the raisin. Fold with sticky side toward one bear cookie, to create bangs, going over to her back. Repeat as needed to cover top of head.

6. If needed, add another strip to fill in back of head.

7. Cut two more strips to make braids, add to back.

8. Cut two more to make braids to add to front. Yes, that is 4 braids, but this way it looks like she has braids from every direction.

9. Cut marshmallows, press cut side toward the animal crackers on both sides to make woman, child, and animals able to stand up.

COMPLETE CARRIAGE

10. Put box on side. Spread sugar glue on rounder edge of pretzel. Press to side of wagon, wait a couple of minutes to allow to dry (it will not take long).

11. Turn over wagon. I put an extra pretzel underneath the overturned wagon to make it flat. Glue on second wheel, allow to dry.

12. Turn wagon upright so it sits on the “wheels.”

13. Insert women and children. Place the “horses” very close to the “wagon.” Put remaining pretzel over necks to form rains, rest on the wagon.
