Leviticus 8:6And Moshe brought Aharon and his sons [Nadav and Avihu] closer, and washed them with water.
8:7And [Moshe] dressed [Aharon] the tunic, and belted him with the sash, and put on that the cloak, and placed upon him the Eiphod (apron), and secured the cloak with the decorated band.
8:8And [Moshe] placed upon [Aharon] the Choshen [breastplate] containing the Urim and Tumim.
8:9And [Moshe] put the headdress on [Aharon’s] head, and put on that the golden band, as G-d had commanded Moshe.

8:13And Moshe brought Aharon’s sons closer, and dressed them in the tunic, and belted hem with the sash, and put upon  them head coverings, as G-d had commanded Moshe.

8:30And Moshe took from the anointing oil, and from the blood that was on the alter, and sprinkled them on Aharon and on his sons with him, and he [thus] consecrated Aharon and his clothes and his sons with him[, for the purpose of serving as priests].
8:36 And Aharon and his sons did all of the things that G-d, through Moshe, commanded them to do.

Ingredients as shown:

  • 1 Persian (small) cucumber
  • 1 mini pepper, yellow
  • 2 sesame seeds
  • 1 tomato or red pepper, any size (you just need a sliver)

Tools:

  • 1 knife (and cutting surface)
  • 1 vegetable peeler
  • 1 pair tweezers (optional)

Instructions (Note: you can skip layers; I included them so the kids (and I) remember that each layer matters):

  1. Cut off the top of one end of cucumber to reach the flat part.

2. Cut off another piece the length of your vegetable peeler blade, or a bit smaller.

3. Cut a round piece to form the face.

4. Slice the rest of the cucumber thinly.

5. Take the piece the length of the vegetable peeler blade. Peel around as long as possible. Continue after you reach the white part, so that you are making a wide, greenish-white strip. If it break, just start another strip (I saw this in a sushi-making video using a large cucumber, but they used a knife. I am not that skilled). Alternatively, just peel the cucumber and slice the pealed part thinly.

6. Place the round part of the cucumber on your surface. Cut one of the thin slices in half lengthwise. Arrange to form face and tunic.

7. Cut the peel to size to form the coat to cover the tunic. You may need a couple of pieces. (or alternatively arrange the green peels to cover most of the white tunic part).

8. Cut the white part to form the apron (eiphod).

9. Place on the coat.

10. Cut one of the flat edges of the yellow mini pepper.

11. Cut to a square, and place the “Eiphod” on the choshen. OK, mine was not exactly square, but it is supposed to be square. Maybe I will fix it for next year….

12. Cut the cucumber end in half. Cut a half-round from the remaining pepper part, trim so that it is the approximate size of the cucumber end. Place above the “face” (I cheated and hollowed out the cucumber half so that it could overlap the “face” a bit).

13. Cut a sliver off of whatever you are using for red. Place on “face” to form a mouth, add black sesame seeds, et voila’!
