Avraham Welcoming Visitors

Amongst Parashat Vayeira’s many narratives is the story of Avraham welcoming three visitors. This story takes place at the very beginning of the parsha. The word used is “Anashim,” which means people. However, to my recollection (will double check, but no time at the moment) most midrashim and traditional interpretations consider these visitors angels, messengers sent to tell Avraham and Sarah that they will soon be parents together.

To emphasize this interpretation, and also to make the snack more interesting, I have added wings to the visitors. I did this although it is not Jewish tradition that angels have wings necessarily, and certainly not only 2. Furthermore, the story clearly states that the visitors appeared to be human. So you may choose to eliminate the wings, but I thought they were cute and would emphasize the traditional interpretation.

I am on a business trip and brought no scissors. As such, as you will see, I merely pinched off pieces of marshmallow for this snack. It worked pretty well.

Ingredients as Shown:

  • Fruit leather, any color
  • 1 large marshmallow
  • 4 bear-shaped animal crackers

Tools:

  • None (though scissors for cutting are optional)

Instructions:

  1. Separate fruit leather from backing, place on your work surface sticky side up. Make a tear to create a flap for what will be the tent. Press sticky side to sticky side you the flap remains open. (instructions for round fruit leather, if you are using a different shape adjust accordingly).

2. Make small folds, sticky side to sticky side, until you create a “tent.”

3. Cut or tear off pieces of the marshmallow (edges are easiest) to create “wings.” Press sticky side on to 3 of the bear-shaped cookies.

4. Tearing or cutting off more marshmallow pieces, place small pieces at the feet of each character, both front and back, to allow them to stand.
