Fish with Fins and Scales

Leviticus 11:9Of all that which is in the water, whether in the ocean or in the rivers, you may eat [only] those that have fins and scales.אֶת־זֶה תֹּאכְלוּ מִכֹּל אֲשֶׁר בַּמָּיִם כֹּל אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ סְנַפִּיר וְקַשְׂקֶשֶׂת בַּמַּיִם בַּיַּמִּים וּבַנְּחָלִים אֹתָם תֹּאכֵלוּ׃
11:10And all that which does not have fins and scales, whether in the oceans or the rivers,וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר אֵין־לוֹ סְנַפִּיר וְקַשְׂקֶשֶׂת בַּיַּמִּים וּבַנְּחָלִים מִכֹּל שֶׁרֶץ הַמַּיִם וּמִכֹּל נֶפֶשׁ הַחַיָּה אֲשֶׁר בַּמָּיִם שֶׁקֶץ הֵם לָכֶם׃
11:11And they will be repulsive to you, you will not eat their meat, and you fill find their carcasses repulsive.וְשֶׁקֶץ יִהְיוּ לָכֶם מִבְּשָׂרָם לֹא תֹאכֵלוּ וְאֶת־נִבְלָתָם תְּשַׁקֵּצוּ׃
11:12Every water creature that does not have both fins and scales will be repulsive to you.כֹּל אֲשֶׁר אֵין־לוֹ סְנַפִּיר וְקַשְׂקֶשֶׂת בַּמָּיִם שֶׁקֶץ הוּא לָכֶם׃

Ingredients:

  •  1 slice of cheese
  • 1 seedless black olive
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 1 mini cucumber
  • Optional: cracker or bread

Tools:

  • 1 fish-shaped cookie cutter, not larger than cheese slice
  • Knife

To Prepare:

  1. Slice cucumber in half, then slice thinly.
  2. Slice celery thinly
  3. Slice olive into rounds

To Assemble:  On a large cracker or half of a leftover piece of matza:

  1. Cut fish shape out of cheese with cookie cutter.
  2. Out of a leftover section of cheese, cut out a fin.
  3. Arrange cucumber slices and fin on cheese slice to show a kosher fish. 
  4. Add olive eye and celery mouth.
  5. Arrange remaining ingredients to form background, as shown.
