Ingredients as shown:
- 12 chocolate chips to mark hours
- 12 jelly beans to mark holidays and days observed. I chose:
- Pastels for Spring holidays: Pink for Passover, light blue for Shavuot;
- Traffic signal colors for fall holidays: Green to start with Rosh Hashana, white for Yom Kippur (because it is the traditional color to wear), orange for sukkot, and red to end with Shmini atzeret/simchat torah;
- Yellow for the newer holidays: Purim, Chanukkah, Tu B’Shvat, and Lag BaOmer; and
- Black for the fast days: 17th of Tammuz, and 9th of Av
- 1 small pretzel stick
Tools: None, but I recommend a round plate, or better yet a lazy susan if you have one.
Instructions:
- Arrange chocolate chips to form the months of the calendar like a clock.
2. Add symbolic jelly beans for the Torah holidays, as described in the Torah, with Passover being in the middle of the first month, and Shavuot coming 49 days later. The “holidays of truot” (Rosh Hashana), followed by You Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah/Shmini Atzeret follow.
3. Carefully turn the plate, so that the “calendar” now reflects the way we see it, with Rosh Hashana, etc. being at the begininnig.
4. Add the non-biblical holidays: Chanukkah, Tu B’shvat, Purim, and Lag B’Omer
5. Add the fasts commemorating the breaching and destruction of the temples: 17th of Tammuz and 9th of Av.
6. Add a pretzel stick to show where you are in the year! This year, Parashet Emor falls between Rosh Chodesh Iyar and Lag BaOmer!
