Kosher Fish Variations

Leviticus 11:9Of all that which is in the water, whether in the ocean or in the rivers, you may eat [only] those that have fins and scales.אֶת־זֶה תֹּאכְלוּ מִכֹּל אֲשֶׁר בַּמָּיִם כֹּל אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ סְנַפִּיר וְקַשְׂקֶשֶׂת בַּמַּיִם בַּיַּמִּים וּבַנְּחָלִים אֹתָם תֹּאכֵלוּ׃
11:10And all that which does not have fins and scales, whether in the oceans or the rivers,וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר אֵין־לוֹ סְנַפִּיר וְקַשְׂקֶשֶׂת בַּיַּמִּים וּבַנְּחָלִים מִכֹּל שֶׁרֶץ הַמַּיִם וּמִכֹּל נֶפֶשׁ הַחַיָּה אֲשֶׁר בַּמָּיִם שֶׁקֶץ הֵם לָכֶם׃
11:11And they will be repulsive to you, you will not eat their meat, and you fill find their carcasses repulsive.וְשֶׁקֶץ יִהְיוּ לָכֶם מִבְּשָׂרָם לֹא תֹאכֵלוּ וְאֶת־נִבְלָתָם תְּשַׁקֵּצוּ׃
11:12Every water creature that does not have both fins and scales will be repulsive to you.כֹּל אֲשֶׁר אֵין־לוֹ סְנַפִּיר וְקַשְׂקֶשֶׂת בַּמָּיִם שֶׁקֶץ הוּא לָכֶם׃

Ingredients:

  •  2 slices of cheese (3 can make two snacks)
  • 1 seedless black olive
  • 1 sliver tomato, red pepper, or whatever you want to make the mouth.
  • 1 mini cucumber OR two cherry tomatoes
  • Optional: cracker or bread

Tools:

  • Knife

Instructions:

  1. Slice one piece of cheese crosswise as shown. Cut one of the triangles in half again, as shown.

2. Place one square and one larger triangle as shown.

3. Cut the cucumber or tomatoes in half lengthwise. Cut the halves into very thin half-circles.

4. Cut a sliver off of the olive. Place it where you want the “eye”. Add whatever you are using for a mouth.

5. Arrange the cucumbers or tomatoes as scales, placing a fin just before the last row.

6. Admire, place on bread, enjoy!
