Reuven’s Flag:

Mandrake Flower

If you recall, Reuven found a mandrake flower and brought it to his mother, Leah, as a gift. As mandrake flowers were said to help in fertility, Rachel Rachel, who had no children, asked for the flower, in exchange for a night with their mutual husband. Bereishit/Genesis 30:14.

Ingredients as shown:

  • 1 Graham Cracker
  • Powdered sugar
  • 2 purple, lavender, or white jelly beans
  • A tiny sliver of yellow jell bean
  • Red sugar sprinkles

Tools:

  • Bowl
  • Spoon

Instructions as Shown:

  1. Cut the jelly beans forming the mandrake flower petals in quarters legnthwise. Cut a sliver from yellow jelly bean, if using.

2. Put the powdered sugar in the bowl. Barely dampen, enough to make a thick paste. Note that the sugar will shrink down in the water.

3. Spread the sugar paste thinly on the graham cracker.

4. Create as many mandrake flowers as you like. Each flower has five petals and a yellow center. If you do NOT want colored sugar to stick to the flower, put the petals cut side down. (Note: if not using sugar spread, putting the cut sides down will also cause the jelly beans to stick to the graham crackers).

5. Sprinkle with red colored sugar or red sprinkles.
