Deuteronomy 6:4 | Listen, Israel: G-d is our God, G-d is One (singular). |
6:5 | And these words, which I command you today, are to be upon your heart. |
6:6 | You are to repeat them with your children, and are to speak of them when sitting in your house, and when walking in the way, and when you lay down, and when you arise.
6:7 | You are to tie them as a sign upon your hand, and they are to be bands between your eyes. |
This is not the most kid-friendly nosh, and may also not be easy to make on Shabbat (either because you may want to cut the paper backing or because you want to continually refer to instructions). But I could not resist the challenge.
Ingredients:
- 4 Chocolate covered wafer cookies
- 1-2 roll fruit leather strip(s) (depending on width
Tools:
- Scissors
- Knife
Instructions:
- Cut two of the wafers crosswise, and cut the fruit leather legnthwise if using a single, wider strip. Cut with the paper backing; otherwise it is likely to stick to itself. If using a traditional fruit leather roll, you may cut strips about 1/2 inch wide, and stick them together end-to-end.
2. Stack two halves on a whole piece so the exposed ends face back, and put the two other halves so the exposed end is down, facing the whole end.
3. This is the tricky part. You can either finesse to pretend the “straps” are correctly knotted, or watch videos a million times like I did. Obviously the latter should not be done on Shabbat, but if you want to try to make the tefillin look realistic, here are videos you can follow.
