The Entire Community, Entering Into the Covenant Together

Leader, elder, law officer, man, baby, woman, woodchopper, waterdrawer

Deuteronomy / Dvarim 29:9You are all standing today before Hashem your G-d, your tribal leaders, your elders, and your law officers; every man of Israel,אַתֶּם נִצָּבִים הַיּוֹם כֻּלְּכֶם לִפְנֵי ה אֱלֹקיכֶם רָאשֵׁיכֶם שִׁבְטֵיכֶם זִקְנֵיכֶם וְשֹׁטְרֵיכֶם כֹּל אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
29:10your children, your women, and the others (those who did not descend from Jacob) who live in your camps, from woodchopper to waterdrawer—טַפְּכֶם נְשֵׁיכֶם וְגֵרְךָ אֲשֶׁר בְּקֶרֶב מַחֲנֶיךָ מֵחֹטֵב עֵצֶיךָ עַד שֹׁאֵב מֵימֶיךָ׃
29:11To pass (as one) into the covenant with Hashem your G-d, and into His oath, into which covenant Hashem your G-d enters with you today,לְעׇבְרְךָ בִּבְרִית ה אֱלֹקיךָ וּבְאָלָתוֹ אֲשֶׁר ה אֱלֹקיךָ כֹּרֵת עִמְּךָ הַיּוֹם׃
29:12in order to establish you this day as a people for Him, and  He will be your G-d, as He told you, and as He swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
29:13I make this covenant, …, not only with you,וְלֹא אִתְּכֶם לְבַדְּכֶם אָנֹכִי כֹּרֵת אֶת־הַבְּרִית הַזֹּאת ׅׅׅ׃
29:14but both with those who are standing here with us this day before our G-d  and with those who are not with us here this day.

Ingredients as Shown:

  • 8 Bear-Shaped Cookies
  • 1 Large Marshmallow
  • Powdered Sugar

Tools:

  • Scissors

Instructions:

For each member of the community, make a costume using a portion of the marshmallow. Below are instructions for how I made the costumes, in the order I made them… you should make them how you see fit!

Make sure to read the information on purchasing and cutting marshmallows!

  1. Baby: Cut an edge from the marshmallow. Wrap it around the diaper area of the bear cracker.

2. Water Drawer: Cut the next slice from the marshmallow’s edge. Cut that piece in half. Press to the hands of the “person,” then coat exposed parts with powdered sugar so it doesn’t stick o everything. (Sorry… the final photo is blurry… then got eaten…)

3. Woman: Cut a large, fat piece of marshmallow. Put over the top and down the back to form “hair.”

4. Law Officer: Cut a slice off the top, wrap into a circle, place on top of a “person’s” head such that it forms a cap.

5. Elder: Cut another half-circle, place it as a “beard.” Note that this elder has only one leg, only because I ran out of bear-shaped cookies and this is what was left.

6. Wood Cropper: Cut a portion of what is left in roughly the size of a log. Press to “person’s” shoulder. Sprinkle with (or dip in) powdered sugar to avoid sticking to everything else.

7. Man of the Community: Cut a small slice of the marshmallow, preferably from an edge such that only one side is sticky (it doesn’t really matter very much, though). Put as a kippa/yarmulka/skullcap on the “man.”

8. Leader of the Community: Take what remains of the marshmallow, roll it into a “walking stick” (or just use a pretzel), press to last “person.” (Yes…by this time there was a great deal of powdered sugar on my work surface.)

Et voila! The Entire Community!
